First Bus has introduced four repowered electric buses on the streets of Solent for the first time as First Bus introduces four newly converted electric buses into service in Portsmouth, Fareham and Gosport
Originally diesel, the buses have been fully refurbished and converted to electric at NewPower’s Bicester facility. With a market-leading range of over 230 miles, these zero-emission vehicles deliver a cleaner, more sustainable travel option.
The move follows the electrification of First Bus’s Hoeford depot and the successful rollout of 62 new electric buses across the region. The repowered buses which will be used on various routes including those serving the University of Portsmouth will help to extend vehicle lifespans while cutting waste and emissions.
Developed by NewPower, a Wrightbus company, the conversion process replaces diesel engines with electric powertrains at a fraction of the cost and time of buying new. Each conversion avoids up to 70,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.
Wrightbus CEO Jean-Marc Gales said “It’s incredibly satisfying to know that these repowered buses will have an immediate impact on reducing pollution in and improving air quality for the people who live, work and travel in Portsmouth, Fareham and Gosport.”
First Bus South’s Engineering Director, Gary Weaver, added: This initiative not only provides a second life for existing vehicles but also delivers a low-carbon, sustainable transport option that benefits both passengers and the wider community.
