Wrightbus zero-emission fleet covers 6 million miles and saves 10,000 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere

Zero-emission buses developed by leading manufacturer Wrightbus have prevented more than 10,000 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere and have travelled over 6 million miles (10 million km) since first entering service.

The incredible milestones come as Wrightbus continues to win orders in the UK and Europe.

The Ballymena-based company is leading the way in technological advances in hydrogen fuel cell buses, and has developed world-leading efficient electric power trains, used for both hydrogen and battery electric powered buses. It is the only manufacturer in Europe to offer a full suite of zero-emission options with both double- and single-deck battery electric and hydrogen options.

Wrightbus launched its first zero-emission bus - the Streetdeck Hydroliner - in 2020 in Aberdeen, with the fleet entering passenger service in January 2021.

Since then, zero-emission buses coming out of Ballymena have covered 6.2 million miles and saved over 10,400 tonnes of CO2 emissions entering the atmosphere compared to journeys made by an equivalent diesel bus.

Jean Marc Gales, Chief Executive of Wrightbus, said: “These incredible statistics underline the importance of the work we are doing here at Wrightbus. We have a long-stated ambition of reducing the environmental impact of public transport and driving a greener future. These milestones are more than just numbers, they represent significant improvements in the air quality and environment of the towns and cities where our buses operate.”

This year has been another incredibly successful one for Wrightbus with a number of significant orders. Last week it was revealed that German bus operator West Verkehr had ordered a fleet of 12 Kite Hydroliners after a Europe-wide tender process. Last month Wrightbus signed a deal with Sizewell C that could see up to 150 hydrogen buses operating on the site.

Other orders on the 2023 books include 104 electric buses for Go Ahead in Oxfordshire, 48 buses for Stagecoach for use in London and 117 vehicles for First Bus across the UK.
