100 zero emission electric buses for Translink propels green growth for Northern Ireland

 

Translink set to roll out one of the largest fleets of zero emission buses in the UK and Ireland 

 

Thousands of bus passengers will soon be enjoying cleaner journeys and an enhanced customer experience as Translink rolls out a new electric fleet built by local manufacturer Wrightbus, in Ballymena.

 

Today, (30 May), Translink unveiled the first electric double decker Ulsterbus, the first of a mixed fleet of 40 double and single decker buses soon to operate in Derry~Londonderry, Limavady, Strabane, Coleraine and Portadown helping to decarbonise regional bus fleets.

 

In addition, a further 60 electric buses for Metro, will mean 50% of the Belfast fleet will be made up of zero emission and 50% low emission helping create a cleaner city for all.

 

Funded by the Department for Infrastructure, the new modern buses will improve the passenger experience, providing users with considerably quieter and more comfortable journeys. They will also meet enhanced accessibility standards and will come with the latest passenger experience features, such as Wi-Fi, USB charging sockets and digital audio-visual next stop announcements.

“We have ambitious plans to be climate positive by 2050 and the roll out of these buses is another huge milestone in our journey to achieve this. 

 

“We have collaborated with Wrightbus and a range of stakeholders including energy suppliers, other vehicle manufacturers and universities to develop the region as a centre of excellence for zero-emission technology supporting the local green economy and creating new jobs.”

 

Jean-Marc Gales, Chief Executive of Wrightbus, added: “Wrightbus has worked closely with Translink on the development of these buses reducing carbon emissions in Northern Ireland, helping attract more people to travel by public transport.

 

“Together we have created market leading technology which is now sought the world over supporting the region’s manufacturing sector creating and sustaining highly skilled green jobs. 

 

Delivery of the fleet will commence June 2024 with the last vehicle arriving in the first quarter of 2025.

 

The new fleet will also be supported with high tech charging infrastructure at local bus depots.
